Bike in a box: what do you have to do yourself?

A boxed bike is 85–95% assembled

Straight talk: a bike from a box still needs work from you. This is what is left to do — and what it costs if we do it for you.

What you have to do yourself

  • Fit the handlebars and saddle. The handlebars and saddle always come loose in the box. Grease and fit the seat post and stem yourself.
  • Front wheel. The front wheel comes loose in the box. Fit it yourself.
  • Front mudguard and front carrier. These come loose in the box. Fit them yourself. Not every bike comes with a front carrier.
  • Fit the pedals. The pedals are supplied loose. Watch out: one has a left-hand and one a right-hand thread.
  • Stabilisers. On children's bikes the stabilisers are not fitted, to save room in the box. Fit them yourself.
  • Adjusting. Brakes, gears and chain still need adjusting.
  • Check and lubricate. Every bolt and nut needs checking and all moving parts need lubricating.
  • Inflate the tyres. The tyres need to be brought up to the right pressure.
  • Bottom bracket on Volare bikes. Always tighten this — a large nut, anticlockwise. Very important.

How long does it take?

  • Volare children's bikes: about 60 minutes
  • Altec bikes: about 40 minutes
  • MBM bikes: about 15 minutes

Please note: this takes longer than some online sellers will tell you.

Tips

  • Experience. If you have never assembled a bike before, it is wiser to collect it fully assembled.
  • Tools. Doing it yourself calls for specific tools and lubricants.
  • Safety. A badly assembled bike wears out faster and can be dangerous.

We will also make it fully ready to ride
